A disease with its own name
The condition caused by biopolymers has a medical name: iatrogenic allogenosis, or ASIA syndrome in its most systemic form. It is not "a bad reaction" or something temporary. It is a chronic inflammatory response of the body to a material it cannot degrade or expel.
What makes diagnosis difficult is time. Symptoms can appear months or even years after the injection, by which time many patients no longer associate what they are feeling with that aesthetic procedure.
Symptoms in the injected area
These are the first to appear and the most recognizable:
- Tissue hardening. The area loses its softness and feels like firm nodules or plaques under the skin.
- Pain. It can be constant or appear when pressing, sitting, or walking, depending on the area.
- Color changes. Redness, purplish tones, or darkened areas that do not subside.
- Progressive deformity. The contour changes over time because the material shifts.
- Visible migration. Lumps appear in places where nothing was ever injected: thighs, knees, lower back, abdomen.
- Increased local temperature. The area feels warmer than the rest of the body.
- Material or discharge leakage. In advanced cases, the skin ulcerates and drains.
General symptoms
This is the part that often goes unnoticed. Many patients come to the clinic after years of undiagnosed studies:
- Persistent fatigue that does not improve with rest
- Diffuse joint and muscle pain
- Recurrent low-grade fever with no identified cause
- Hair loss
- Sleep disturbances
- Elevated inflammatory markers in blood tests
- Dry eyes and mouth
When these symptoms occur in someone with a history of non-medical aesthetic injections, the link should be investigated.
Why diagnosis is delayed
Many patients do not mention their history. Sometimes out of embarrassment, sometimes because they don't know what was injected, sometimes because they were told it was "collagen" or "vitamins." Without that information, general symptoms are attributed to fibromyalgia, stress, or rheumatological diseases.
If you had something injected years ago and are not feeling well today, mention it during your consultation. It completely changes the diagnostic approach.
When to consult without delay
Seek prompt attention if you experience high fever, sudden onset of severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, or if the skin has opened and is draining. These signs suggest infection and require immediate evaluation.
In other cases, a scheduled consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon allows for a calm and image-based study of the case.
